In 1993, Varg Vikernes of Norwegian, black metal music project Burzum was tried for the murder of former bandmate and friend Mayhem frontman Øystein Aarseth/Euronymous. Vikernes was sentenced to 21 years in prison and only served 14 years on self-defense, an event that shook the black metal world. The 1997 book Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground written by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind attempted to uncover their story. In the mid 2010s, a movie adaptation was rumoured to be in post-production, against the wishes of those closely involved including Mayhem and Vikernes who reportedly refused use of their music in the film. "Lords of Chaos" was finally released at the 2018 Sundance film festival by Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund, known for his music videos and early spoofs of television commercials.
Lords of Chaos – Official Trailer HD (2016) features the song Dunkelheit by Burzum, juxtaposed with a performance music video of Irish ensemble Celtic Woman.
